SCOPE & CONTENT:

The Orville Wanzer photographic collection consists mainly of slides various flora and fauna, taken in the Gila National Forest in New Mexico and in Kuwait.

BIOGRAPHY:

Orville Wanzer was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 5th, 1930. He attended school at P.S. 12 in Queens, N.Y. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June of 1948, honorably discharged in June of 1952; having attained the rating of Electrician's Mate 2nd Class. He attended the University of Miami from July, 1954 until June of 1959, receiving his Master's Degree in English Literature. He started teaching as an Instructor at New Mexico State University in the English Department. While at New Mexico State he taught English Composition, English Literature and speech before moving to the Journalism Department, where he taught photography and motion pictures. He retired as a full Professor Emeritus in June of 1985. He wrote and directed two feature films, "The Devil's Mistress" (1966) and "George Andrews" (1972) and also made numerous short films. His novel "The Elfin Brood" was published in the 1990's. He now works in stained glass and lives on a ranch west of Derry, New Mexico. He has two children, Katya Wanzer, living in New York City and Kip Wanzer, living in Seattle.
