BIOGRAPHY:

Dr. Morris Southward is an Emeritus Professor of Statistics at New Mexico State University. His Doctorate is in Fisheries with a Minor in Mathematical Statistics. His early research experience was with the International Pacific Halibut Commission, where he studied the effect of the fishery on the growth rate of halibut, as well the effect of the fishery on the mortality of the halibut population. In the course of these studies, he took many biological photographs.  Later he taught statistics at Washington State University and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Also, he was a visiting professor in the department of statistics at the university of Edinburgh. He joined the faculty of NMSU in the Department of Experimental Statistics. He has taught classes in experimental design, regression analysis, and sampling theory.  At NMSU, in addition to teaching classes in statistics, he served as a statistician for both the NM Agricultural Experiment Station and the University Statistics Center.

Aside from his prestigious teaching career, Dr. Southward served St. James' Episcopal Church, Mesilla Park as Junior Warden, 1997-98, and Senior Warden, 1999-2000.  Formerly a member of the Diocesan Council.  He has deposited many papers relating to St. James' and the Diocese of the Rio Grande (Episcopal) with IHSF.

Dr. Southward, an avid photographer, began photography while he was in high school in Boise, Idaho.  He took photography courses at the University of Washington and the University of Wisconsin.  His photographic interests include landscapes, textures, and naturally occurring still life compositions.  However, he photographs a wide variety of subjects.  Dr. Southward has had his work in several galleries.  He began volunteering at IHSF in 2000. Much of the photography in the IHSF finding aids and presentation slides is his work. He has also served as a photographer for the Oral History Club as an IHSF representative.  Also, he photographs, as a volunteer, exhibits and other materials for the Bruce King Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum, for inclusion in their archives.
