SCOPE & CONTENT:

Photos: Slides from the late 1960’s-mid-1990’s, primarily by Scavone. Some commercial slides. Includes:

  • 100 commercial slides of the Holy Land with booklet; 194 additional Holy Land slides by Scavone.

  • 43 slides of “Coins of the Bible” (copies from photographs of the coins.) Includes presentation speaking notes.

  • 171 slides of coins and paper money, of which 77 are part of a presentation on the designs on U.S. paper money used circa 1990. Additional 124 slides of modern U.S. coins.

  • 16 slides of tokens minted by the U.S. for use by colonists of the Matanuska Colonization Project minted in 1935. They were redeemable only in the Alaska Rural Rehabilitation Corporation (ARRC) stores in Palmer, Alaska.

  • 95 slides of the St. Augustine Catholic Cathedral in Tucson, AZ, including interior, exterior, statues and stained glass windows.

  • Approx. 400 slides of the Alaska Railroad, including locomotives, cars, structures and copies of old photos of the Alaska Railroad. 12 slides of WWII airplanes.

  • 970 slides of railroads other than Alaska, street cars and busses, scenes in Southern Arizona, small town buildings, automobiles, trucks, desert scenery. Most taken in the 1970’s.

BIOGRAPHY:

Cirino Scavone travelled around southern Arizona as a Bank Auditor in the 1970’s and, as an amateur photographer, took photos of subjects that interested him. As a numismatist, he prepared slides for presentations to Bible groups, coin collectors and service clubs. He also documented the restoration of St. Augustine Cathedral in Tucson. While living in Alaska, he enjoyed his hobby of train watching and photography.
