SCOPE & CONTENT:

Photo slides & prints: travels in U.S. and Canada, 1940s – 1970s, with an emphasis on botany.

BIOGRAPHY:

Born in 1909, J. Herbert Heger was a chief photographer, naturalist, and lecturer for the National Park Service. Many of his famous photos can be found in this collection.

Herbert obtained a bachelors degree in botany and a master’s in education administration, both of which prepared him for a career in education and serving the National Park Service. He was a biology teacher, chairman, and principal of two different high schools for 35 years, in addition to serving as the program director for the Hamilton County Park District. Other accomplishments include being a life member and president of the Ohio Audubon Society, as well as president of the Wild Flower Preservation Society.

J. Herbert Heger died in Las Cruces in April 2004.
