DONOR: Linden Ranels and Mary Margaret Brummeler SIZE: 3 cubic feet SCOPE & CONTENT: The Dr. Wesley Emmet Gatewood collection of journals (diaries), a book of poetry, a book of cures for ailments and a book of mathematical problems BIOGRAPHY: Wesley Emmet Gatewood, M.D. was born in "a log cabin with a dirt floor" on October 23, 1845. At the age of 19 Dr. Gatewood began recording his activities almost daily. His journals report his life as a Southeastern Ohio farmer advancing through a Dartmouth College medical degree. He returned to Ohio and later Nashville, Tennessee to practice medicine. He reported on his travels and his impressions of the Civil War. Dr. Gatewood's granddaughter, Linden Ranels, has transcribed these journals, and they are available for research at IHSF. Linden is a volunteer at the Institute. |
