The Cobean collection includes negatives, prints, slides, films, and published materials. Primary topics include New Mexico items regarding artist Peter Hurd, John Meigs, Henriette Wyeth Hurd, Peter Rogers, Carol Hurd Rogers, San Patricio and the Hondo Valley, and polo games; rocket pioneer Robert Goddard, to include laboratory, launch sites, and commemorative events involving Werner von Braun, Mrs. Goddard, and astronaut Harrison Schmidt; various Native American subjects to include Acoma Pueblo, Laguna Pueblo, Mescalero Apaches, the Gallup ceremonials, and various dances and festivals; economist and philanthropist Robert O. Anderson; golfer Nancy Lopez; baseball slugger Joe Bauman; Lincoln County and Old Lincoln town; Ruidoso and Ruidoso Downs Racetrack; the Santa Fe Fiesta; the New Mexico agriculture and cattle industries; landscapes; aerial photography; night photography; natural history; ghost towns and archaeology. A frequent focus of his work is the area in and about Roswell, New Mexico. Roswell area subjects include the Roswell Symphony, Roswell Museum, public parks, schools, shopping centers, buildings, construction sites, New Mexico Military Institute, area weddings, civic events, accidents, weather and sporting events, and various artists, musicians and other personalities. Other collections include the 1964 Alaskan Earthquake in Anchorage, archaeological subjects of Mexico & Central America, Europe, and nationally known politicians such as Barry Goldwater, John Anderson, and John Tower.

BIOGRAPHY:

Hial Kenyon (Ken) Cobean , a native of Roswell, New Mexico, was born on May 22, 1927. Beginning in the eighth grade when he read the book "Digging in Yucatan," by Ann Morris, he maintained an interest in Meso-American archaeology and civilization. Cobean served in the U. S. Navy during World War II and attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, majoring in engineering. Nationally recognized as a free lance photographer, his work has appeared in publications such as "Life," "Time," "Look," "New Mexico Magazine," "Architectural Forum," "Boys Life," "Sports Illustrated," "U. S. Camera," "American Heritage," "Vision Magazine," "People Today," "Adventure," "Western Review," "The New York Times," and countless other newspapers. He was a regular contributing writer and photographer for "Vision Magazine" of the Roswell Daily Record. He received numerous awards, including both silver and bronze medals in worldwide competition from Kodak at the New York World's Fair in 1964-1965. Ken Cobean died April 14, 2007.
