SCOPE & CONTENT:

Historical artifacts, and legal documents relating to the New Mexico Spanish colonial era. Newspaper clippings, published and unpublished historical articles, certificates, documents, writings, correspondence, and photographs related to the lives of Mr. Leslie Alvin Cardwell and Mrs. Rosalie Cardwell, and a few other people related to the Oyler family. Includes account books related to the operation of a country store, and seed and agricultural product catalogs and those related to stamp collecting and storage.

BIOGRAPHY:

The Cardwells were born in the 1880s and were living in Carthage TN at the beginning of the 20th century. By 1912, they had moved to Clayton NM, and by 1922, they were living in Las Cruces NM. Mr. Cardwell worked as a bank teller, notary public, owner of a country store, real estate broker, and collector of books and magazines, foreign currency, stamps, postcards, greeting cards, stationary, promotional tourist literature, war bonds, and draft notices. Mrs. Cardwell worked as an Associated Press correspondent. Both Mr. and Mrs. Cardwell had significant interest in local history and were involved with archaeology and history associations, women's associations, and the Modern Woodmen of America.
